Flat Front Pant Suits

Among men, there’s a constant debate (and poll) going that always leaves sides in a dead lock—“Which is a better choice, pleated or flat front pant suits?” This question springs up every time men are unsure of what type of suit to wear or buy. For the record, there are no particular rules about pleated or flat front dress trousers that favor the use of one over the other.  It is best to just know the purposes that each trouser type gives to identify which type works best.

The pleated pants come in different pleat styles: inverse pleats, reverse pleats, single, and double pleats. But the overall purpose of the pleats is to give the pants a symmetrically smooth drop when worn. First thing to know, the pleated pants are worn on the natural waist, that is somewhere in between the hips and the belly button area. Naturally, the pleats are put there to accommodate the curve on the belly and the hip area when the user sits down and to give the pants a good shape when standing.

That being said, the flat front pants is used when the beltline is worn right on the hip. Thus the problem on giving extra room for movement no longer exists.  The absence of pleats creates a smooth outline from the hips down to the heels and more appropriate for straight cut pants. Wearing pleated pants on the hips will only create a visual deformity where the wearer’s legs will look like melons especially when the pants are closely fitted at the cuffs. It should also be noted that tux trousers should not have cuffs.

Although flat front pants are more in fashion in recent decades, whether a person chooses to wear pleated or flat front pant suits, is a matter of personal choice. Suit jackets can be used with any of these pants design as long as the color and fabric are matched. If there’s one thing that has to be learned about fashion it is precisely that it’s a matter of finding things that is a perfect fit for the wearer, comfort-wise and aesthetic-wise. As long as you look good, breaking minor fashion rules are no longer accounted for.
